factoids
Frederick William Franz (September 12, 1893 – December 22, 1992) was a member of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1971 and president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, a legal entity used to administer the work of Jehovah's Witnesses. He had previously served as vice-president of the same corporation from 1945 until 1977 when he replaced Nathan H. Knorr as president. His position as president was administrative, as the Governing Body assumed over-all control of all Jehovah's Witness corporations in 1976.Jehovah's Witnesses - Proclaimers of God's Kingdom, Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society, 1993, page 111.

Early life and education

Franz was born on September 12, 1893, in Covington, Kentucky.BOOK, English Language Bible Translators, William E., Paul, McFarland, 2015-07-11,weblink 9781476610238, 85, BOOK, Encyclopedia of Protestantism: 4-volume Set, Hans J., Hillerbrand, Routledge, 2004, 9781135960285,weblink 895, He was baptized in the Lutheran Church, but attended Catholic services as a child as a matter of convenience, before later attending the Presbyterian Church."Looking Back Over 93 Years of Living", The Watchtower, May 1, 1987, page 22-30.He graduated from Woodward High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1911 and attended the University of Cincinnati, where he studied liberal arts and biblical Greek,BOOK, Penton, M. James, James Penton, Apocalypse Delayed: The Story of Jehovah's Witnesses, University of Toronto Press, 1997, 2nd, 174, 0-8020-7973-3, with the intention of becoming a Presbyterian preacher. He knew German and could read Latin, Greek and in later years self-taught Spanish, Portuguese, French and Hebrew.BOOK, Chryssides, George, Jehovah's Witnesses: Continuity and Change, Ashgate publishing, 2016, Chapter 7: The Bible, Raymond Franz claims that only his uncle [Frederick Franz] had a reasonable knowledge of Greek ... but apparently he self taught himself Hebrew. ... the committee nonetheless succeeded in producing an independent translation of the Bible, which is quite a remarkable achievement.,

Career

His association with the Bible Students began after he read the booklet Where are the Dead? by John Edgar. After studying the literature of Charles Taze Russell, he was baptized as a Bible Student. In Franz' own account of 1987, the baptism took place on April 5, 1914."Looking Back Over 93 Years of Living", The Watchtower", May 1, 1987, page 25 A 1993 Watchtower obituary gives the date of November 30, 1913."Rewarded With the Crown of Life", The Watchtower, March 15, 1993, pages 31, 32. The earlier date was confirmed by research of the Watch Tower Society.SPEECH/OLD, Flodin, Kenneth, November, 2015, ‘This Generation Will . . . Not Pass Away’ (Matt. 24:34),weblink May 1, 2024, 6:31, Now, some of you wrote in after the September 2015 JW Broadcasting program and addressed what seemed to be a discrepancy between what Brother Splane said and what was stated in the life story of Brothers Franz in a 1987 Watchtower. The Watchtower said that Brother Franz was baptized April 5, 1914. Brother Splane said he was baptized in November of 1913. Well, why the difference? Well, prior to his life story, our publications always said he was baptized in 1913. But in the 1960s an effort was made to find the precise date of his baptism. And so some who knew Brother Franz when he was "coming into the truth" were contacted. And from those contacts it was assumed that April 5, 1914, would've been the date. Well, Brother Franz was in his 70s at the time and so he just accepted the suggested date. And so that's what was in his life story. However, instantly, interestingly, after his life story, a personal copy of Brother Franz's Daily Heavenly Manna was found in an old suitcase of his. And it dated from 1913. And under the date of November 30, in the margin, in his own handwriting, Brother Franz wrote this: "This sunday", he said, "I was baptized symbolically into Jesus' death this afternoon on Chicago, in Chicago, Illinois." So since this date is specifically designated by Brother Franz, in his own handwriting, in a book dated 1913, that was accepted as the accurate date. And so after his life story, in the '91 Watchtower, it was said he was baptized in 1913. The Proclaimers book said: "November 30, 1913, Brother Franz was baptized." And then when his death was published in the March 15, 1993, Watchtower, that same date of November 30, 1913, was used. So Brother Splane was correct when he said November of 1913., In 1920, he joined the Watch Tower headquarters staff in Brooklyn, New York, and in 1926 became a member of the editorial staff as a Bible researcher and writer for the society's publications. Upon the death of Watch Tower president Joseph Rutherford, Franz became head of the editorial department, and in 1945 he replaced Hayden C. Role in eschatology

{{see main|Eschatology of Jehovah's Witnesses}}In 2010, the Watch Tower Society asserted that the "generation" of 1914—regarded by Jehovah's Witnesses as the last generation before the battle of Armageddon—includes persons whose lives "overlap" with "the anointed who were on hand when the sign began to become evident in 1914."JOURNAL, The Watchtower, Holy spirit's role in the outworking of Jehovah's purposes, April 15, 2010, 10, In 2015, Franz was cited as an example of one of the last members of the "anointed" alive in 1914, suggesting that the "generation" would include any individuals "anointed" up until his death in 1992 at the earliest.WEB, Watch Tower Society, Close to the End of This System of Things, weblink
