The racial makeup was 87.35% (4,868) white, 1.51% (84) black or African-American, 0.77% (43) Native American, 0.65% (36) Asian, 0.02% (1) Pacific Islander, 1.51% (84) from other races, and 8.2% (457) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.0% (267) of the population.Of the 1,939 households, 40.6% had children under the age of 18; 45.8% were married couples living together; 25.6% had a female householder with no husband present. 26.3% of households consisted of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The community is served by Tonganoxie USD 464 public school district. It has a high school, a middle school, and an elementary school.
