Against Super Strings

Strings, Super Strings, Super-Symmetrical Strings, etc, were the result of clever mathematical ideas and equations developed to explain what was seen as a flux beneath the observed subatomic particles, particularly during the early periods of Quantum Mechanics or Quantum Physics. The difficulty presented by the quantum realm led some physicists and mathematicians to try to reconcile this with Classical Physics. It is the grand fallacy underlying all scientific unification efforts, the presumption that:

(Problem #1) We must conform probability thinking to classical thinking, rather than the reverse, or rather than use two different forms of mathematical language.

Many simply ignore this problem, and move on to attempting to prove String Theory by conducting experiments. This led to what is really a fatal problem, that the strings simply cannot be shown through repeatable experimental evidence.

(Problem #2) There is absolutely no experimental evidence proving Super Strings actually exist in reality.

Undaunted by this fatal blow, fans of various string theories posited that the Super Strings actually exist in as many as eleven (11) different dimensions of reality. They called this “Membrane Theory”, or just M-Theory. Naturally, this led to even deeper problems.

(Problem #3) There is absolutely no experimental evidence proving there are any more than three (3) spatial dimensions. Even Time, the proposed fourth dimension we all feel sure we experience, cannot be shown in hard evidence.

(Problem #4) Since we cannot prove that even Time exists in any real way, we also cannot prove that some seven other dimensions are anything more than fiction, especially when we do not and cannot have any experience of them.

(Problem #5) By arguing that the Universe popped out of a trans-dimensional bubble and that infinitesimally small strings somehow govern all known forces, and without a shred of evidence, it just pushes fundamental metaphysical questions about reality down another level instead of addressing them. Apropos, what governs these strings??

(Problem #6) Instead of avoiding the Indeterminism of Quantum Physics, string theorists have to accept its evidence, while arguing for mathematical fiction, while sidestepping the nature of the electromagnetic field their theory is intended to describe.

Continuing to argue for acceptance of String Theory in the face of so many fatal problems, and especially with a complete lack of any evidence, makes the so-called theory “permanently safe”, as Sheldon Glashow said in a 2003 episode of the NOVA (PBS) television show, that is, permanently safe to continue indefinitely as a pop science theological orthodoxy receiving funding from public and private sources. String Theory is therefore a purely mathematical exercise, an idealized ontological math-only model with no hopes of describing any actual reality.
