Geography

As the word Mashriq refers to countries bounded between the Mediterranean Sea and Iran, it is the companion term to Maghreb (), the western part of North Africa. Libya may itself be seen as bifurcated between Mashriq and Maghreb influences, with its eastern part (Cyrenaica) seen as linked more to Egypt and the Mashriq.BOOK, Gall, Michel Le, Perkins, Kenneth, The Maghrib in Question: Essays in History and Historiography, weblink 2010, University of Texas Press, 978-0-292-78838-1, 8, These geographical terms date from the early Islamic expansion. This region is similar to the Bilad al-Sham and Mesopotamian regions combined.BOOK, Clancy-Smith, Julia, North Africa, Islam and the Mediterranean World, weblink 2013-11-05, Routledge, 978-1-135-31213-8, 98, {{As of|2014}}, the Mashriq is home to 1.7% of the global population.Official estimate of the Population of Egypt {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130525221856weblink |date=May 25, 2013 }}UN estimate for LebanonOfficial Jordanian population clock {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120117225318weblink |date=January 17, 2012 }}WEB, National Main Statistical Indicators, weblink State of Palestine – Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, UN estimate for SyriaWEB,weblink The World Bank, Iraq,
