High school career

Young attended Yates High School under Greg Wise, where he averaged 27.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.4 steals and 3.8 assists per game as a senior to help lead the Lions to a perfect 34-0 record and the No. 1 national ranking in final polls from USA Today, MaxPreps and Rivals.com. In the process, he was named to the Parade All-America Third-Team, the Texas Gatorade Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year and the Class 4A Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-State Team. Young originally committed to Providence, but was forced to sit out a season after fired head coach Keno Davis refused to release him from his letter of intent. He began his collegiate career at Houston, where his father was Director of Basketball Operations. As a sophomore, Young averaged 18 points per game and shot 42 percent from the three-point arc and 87 percent on free throws. Personal life

The son of Tina and Michael Young, his father ranks as the third-leading scorer in Houston Cougars history and is one of five players to have his jersey number retired by the school.
